The long lead, a pup tool that is in my opinion, completely under utilized. When we found out we were expecting a baby, we knew we had a lot of work ahead of us when it came to getting our pups prepared for being around a baby. We needed all of those months and more. It also helped that we have an awesome trainer who was able to work with us. All that hard work has definitely helped our family adjust and the pups have been doing very well with the baby.
We started taking our dogs to a local park on the weekends. Exposing the pups to many people and different activities such as birthday parties, baseball games, outdoor karate and even a dog park. They were definitely stimulated after these trips and needed a way to decompress. We would find an empty space of grass and her the pups set up for what we call a “sniff-ari”. The pups would each get attached to their own long leads (long leashes) each anywhere from 15-30ft. They would then get to independently sniff around and explore while we still had them on leash in case we had to reign them in real quick. They absolutely loved this! And we started using the long leads for so much more as time went on. These long leads can be used on walks, at dog parks or even dog beach. It also made us feel so much comfortable because even though their recall is not the best we’re still able to give them some space.
The ones we use are by Viper and they can be found here. Currently we have 3 in rotation). What I love about these is that they are made out of biothane which is super durable and holds up in all types of conditions. When it comes to the leashes my preferences are
- 1/2 inch in width – easier to handle and carry around
- 15 ft – long enough to give them space without having to lug around a ton of extra leash
- Bright colors – this way anyone around can see the pups are on a leash and identify it’s a long way. Hopefully deterring any moments of possibly getting all tangled up.
Let me know if you are currently using long leads in your dog training regiment and what you think. If you give these ones a purchase, drop in the comments what your thoughts are on it.
